EdVoice, helping parents and communities
initiate real change in local schools

SACRAMENTO- EdVoice this week is releasing a new documentary telling the story of how Sen. Gloria Romero (D-East Los Angeles), Chair of the Senate Education Committee and other legislative leaders worked with the Governor to rewrite California's education laws this year.  The documentary highlights parents' new power to initiate change at local schools.  Parents who have always had primary responsibility for their children now have the real power to stay and help fix persistently failing schools or choose a better performing pubic school in a different zip code.

"California's new education laws finally give parents the power to pull their child out of a failing public school and send them to a better public school, even if it's outside of their school district," said Rae Belisle, CEO of EdVoice. "We owe a debt of gratitude to Senator Gloria Romero for her tireless work in making this possible."

"For too long, parents and grassroots activists have struggled along to organize and fix failing schools at the community level," said Corri Tate Ravare of Families That Can. "EdVoice has stepped into the breach to help us initiative real change and stand up to the special interests trying to preserve the status quo. EdVoice will not take a simple 'no' for an answer. Their grassroots hub and web tools give parents everywhere a new resource to ensure their voices are heard."

EdVoice is also launching two new Web sites to help inform parents and citizens about school reforms that empower parents and communities to initiate positive change at local schools.

The Web sites-www.EdVoice.org and-www.EdVoice.tv will collect and amplify the voices of parents seeking change at their local school-and serve as a resource to access expert analysis for elected officials, their staff and civic-minded Californians focused on education policy.

"Parents want to get involved in their children's school, but they want to know they're not the only ones trying to initiate meaningful change; that they're not alone in taking on the establishment" said Belisle. "Our Web site helps parents and communities to mobilize and take action, and lets them know they're not alone. Too many kids are stuck in failing public schools, and we’re focused, like never before, on turning those schools around."
