The San Diego Unified School District has been ordered to pay back $13.4 million that the state says it improperly diverted from its cafeteria funds to pay for custodial and utility expenses.

The district was asked to transfer the money by June 14 in a letter from the California Department of Education, although officials have now set a meeting with the state for June 21 to discuss the matter.

The state says the money, which comes from a program to subsidize lunches for poor children, was improperly spent on custodial and administrative salaries, utilities and interest payments
